Beyond the Three Branches: Educating Better Citizens

Darcy Daniels and Denise Furlong — Darcy Daniels, High School History Teacher and MA History Teacher of the Year, Nipmuc Regional High School, Upton MA, Denise Furlong, Assistant Professor of Education, Georgian Court University

Building off of the Building School 2.0 Chapter 3, "Citizenship is More Important than the Workforce" (and the podcast that invited us) this is designed to have educators examine their practice to see what their challenges are according to the framework. We will also discuss the increased difficulties surrounding families with mixed citizenship and the need to educate all students on the rights and responsibilities of citizens, no matter their status.

Conversational Practice

After a brief introduction, the two creators will pass out the framework of six competencies and five skills under each competency and have educators examine the framework to discuss where they see strengths in their classrooms and where they see the need to more focus. Highlighters will be passed around to color code, and partners will be encouraged. Educators will then be invited to lay out plans as to how they can reach these goals at the teacher, department, school, or district level.
