Amplifying Every Voice: Equity-Based Pedagogy for Inclusive Classrooms

Lauren Overton/Kelly Schaaf — SDP, GLSEN, SEED New Leaders, Accelerator 228

This powerful professional learning session is designed for all educators—teachers, instructional coaches, and school leaders—committed to building truly inclusive learning environments where every student feels valued, heard, and empowered to contribute. We will collectively explore and practice equity of voice, a pedagogical approach rooted in the principle that all students, regardless of background or learning profile, deserve an equitable chance to participate in and influence the learning process.

Far beyond simple participation, equity of voice requires a deliberate shift in both classroom instruction and school-wide culture.

Teachers and leaders will gain practical, research-based strategies to dismantle traditional hierarchies in classroom discourse, focusing on techniques like structured dialogue, varied response methods, and building psychological safety for risk-taking.

Together, we will ensure that student voice is not just present, but equitably distributed and powerfully leveraged to enhance academic outcomes and build a profoundly inclusive community of learners across every classroom and hallway.

Conversational Practice

All participants will engage in intentional practices to share about their school community through serial testimony, cross-talks, and a community-building session using tools from SEED.
